Moving & Handling Full Day Course

Definition of Manual Handling – “The transportation or supporting of a load (including lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving) by hand or bodily force”.

Course Aims

· To provide you with a sound knowledge of issues involved in moving and handling young people with special needs

· To introduce relevant legislation, roles and responsibilities

· To show stable base and movement techniques for manoeuvring loads and assisting young people

Course Objectives

· To be aware of your employers obligations to you

· To be aware of your roles and responsibilities

· To have knowledge of why a good handling technique is important

· To have practised safe methods of moving and handling

Individuals attending this course will learn that any moving and handling must be carried out correctly and recognise the importance of ensuring a safer working environment for all. The programme is designed to provide attendees with essential knowledge and understanding of the safe process of moving people to prevent injury to themselves and the young person being moved, whilst also covering the legal requirements. The course is delivered in 6 hours (9.15am-3.15pm) and attendees must demonstrate a willingness to learn along with interaction of group activities.

Employers must:

· reduce the risk of injury to staff and young people

· avoiding those manual handling tasks that could result in injury, where reasonably practicable

· assessing the risks from moving and handling that cannot be avoided

· putting measures in place to reduce the risk, where reasonably practicable

Employees must:

· follow appropriate systems of work and use the equipment provided

· co-operate with their employer and let them know of any problems

· take reasonable care to ensure that their actions do not put themselves or others at risk

· The APPEE System of Safer Manual Handling-‘Base to Face Checkpoints’

· Essential Moving & Handling Equipment and Techniques

Moving & Handling Half Day Refresher Course

Refresher course comprising of:-

  • Questions & group discussion – (recap of legislation, spinal care, principles of safer manual handling & looking after yourself)

  • Case studies and group discussion

  • Video clips and group discussion 

  • Toolbox four practical tasks

Attendees must have completed the Full Day Course and then the Refresher Course is required 3 years afterwards.
